1am. DANA and JIM sit facing each other on the sofa.

DANA: It’s just like, he is kind of good-looking

JIM: Mm

DANA: I mean you know who cares, everyone does stupid things to…

JIM: To get to the top

DANA: To get to the top, yeah exactly

JIM: Of course

DANA: I mean I swear it happens like all the time

JIM: Yup

DANA: I mean like loads of people sleep with someone for a job or whatever and it doesn’t make them…

JIM: No no of course not

DANA: I mean it’s not like he is some old fat like whatever. I mean I know he is ginger but I do kind of fancy him

JIM: Mm

DANA: But I like might have anyway

JIM: Yeah

DANA: Not that I’m a slut or anything but you know

JIM: No, no

DANA: Like Jim you are so amazing, like talking to me like this, thank you. I don’t know why Jess is so mean to you, you are amazing.

JIM: Oh sweetheart

DANA: No seriously, it’s so good to have like an adult’s opinion

JIM: Christ am I the adult?

DANA: Yeah well you know what I mean, I know I am and everything but still

JIM: No well what’s it they say? Um, growing old, growing old is mandatory growing up is optional

DANA: (Laughs.) Do they?

JIM: It’s true

DANA: Do you think I’m being really childish?

JIM: No no sweetheart I just mean, oh I don’t really know what I mean

DANA: I don’t know if I think it’s just a good idea because I’m drunk

JIM: Well it’s not a ‘good’ idea

DANA: No well no…(Laughs embarrassed.) no

JIM: But you know you are a grown up you can make your own decisions

DANA: Yeah…yeah I suppose

DANA pauses thinking, bites her lip. JIM watches.

JIM: You know you think you are going to have that magic moment, when you just are a responsible adult. That click moment and you always think it’s just round the corner but well…mine’s still coming

DANA: Yeah, I dunno I just thought like 18, well like 18 and have left school, or like left uni

JIM: Or when you got your first job? Or moved out? Or lived alone? Or got married and had kids?

DANA: (Laughing.) I suppose

JIM: Never comes darling, all you have to do is make the decision in front of you

DANA: Yeah?

JIM: Yes. Look Dana you are young, free, beautiful…

DANA: Oh Jim shut up

JIM: And you aren’t tied down to some boy or place or house or anything, do what you want to do

DANA: I wish you were my dad

They laugh.

DANA: Thank you, thanks Jim

DANA gives JIM a kiss on the cheek, RUTH comes out of the kitchen eating Percy Pig sweets.

DANA: (Gets up.) I’m going to go check on Jess

JIM: Okay sweetheart but I’d leave her to it

DANA: No I’ll check

DANA stumbles out and RUTH comes over.

JIM: Hello darling come for your open heart session?

RUTH: Huh?

JIM: Seem to have been mistaken for an agony aunt tonight

RUTH: Oh I’m sorry about her

JIM: No don’t you worry yourself, only wish Jessie would buck up

RUTH: You know what she’s like she doesn’t
